Sahrawi human rights sources have revealed the continued repressive and racist practices by the administration of Ait Melloul 1 Prison against Sahrawi political prisoner Khambir Mahmoud, who is being held in Wing No. 3, Room No. 7, under Prisoner ID 89605.
According to information obtained by Equipe Media, a masked unit of prison staff raided Mahmoud’s cell in the early hours of the morning, following direct orders from the prison director. During this violent and provocative search, all of his personal belongings, including clothing, books, and food supplies, were confiscated.
Mahmoud’s family confirmed that he has been subjected to systematic mistreatment and restrictions inside his cell, facing various forms of psychological and physical abuse, in coordination with common-law prisoners and with the complicity of the prison administration. The family further stated that these violations came as retaliation after Mahmoud submitted an official request demanding his right to education and medical treatment.
In response to these dire conditions and ongoing violations, Khambir Mahmoud has declared an open-ended hunger strike starting Tuesday, February 11, in protest against the deprivation of his fundamental human rights, demanding proper medical care and transfer to a more humane detention facility.
It is worth noting that Khambir Mahmoud, a Sahrawi media activist, was arrested on September 7, 2022, in Occupied Laayoune and was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Moroccan court on November 23 of the same year.
