Today, at the Abdelrahim Badri site of Ibn Zohr University in Agadir, a new crackdown targeted Sahrawi students, as Moroccan occupation authorities abducted eight students in what has been described as a retaliatory move, following their peaceful activism and political positions supporting the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.
According to reliable student sources, the abducted students include:
• Salah Eddine Essabar (son of the late human rights activist Ibrahim Essabar)
• Ibrahim Babit
• Bachir Lghouizi
• Elhafid Berlman
• Nour Eddine Amflous
• Hamza Laayichi
• Alhansali Othman
• Ayoub Laaradi
Sources reported that the abductees were subjected to harassment and had their mobile phones confiscated, in an attempt to silence free voices and break the spirit of student activism on campus.
This crackdown comes after Moroccan authorities failed to pass disciplinary measures aimed at expelling a group of students following the so-called “Laghsabi Event,” which involved placing the Sahrawi national flag on the grave of the late Ibrahim Essabar, along with other solidarity activities in support of Sahrawi political prisoners.
According to student activists, these incidents highlight the ongoing policy of intimidation and repression, instead of respecting academic freedoms and human rights, particularly the freedom of expression and organization within university campuses.
Sahrawi students remain steadfast in the face of these oppressive practices, calling on the international community and media outlets to take immediate action to pressure occupation authorities to protect their rights.
