On the morning of Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Sahrawi civilian prisoner Sidi Abdallah Ahmed Sidi Abbah, a member of the Gdeim Izik group, reportedly suffered a severe respiratory crisis after prison staff sprayed chemical disinfectants in his cell without prior warning or providing any protective measures. According to a statement by the League for the Protection of Sahrawi Prisoners, his family confirmed that he was transferred in critical condition to the prison infirmary following the sudden deterioration of his health. The incident was allegedly accompanied by verbal and physical abuse from prison staff.
The statement also highlighted the case of Ibrahim Dadi Ismaili, another member of the same group held in Ait Melloul Prison, who has reportedly been denied 15 prescribed physiotherapy sessions since May 21, 2025, for an injury to his right knee. Although the sessions were formally documented in his medical records, none have been administered, leading to a significant worsening of his condition.
In a separate incident on June 19, 2025, the League reported that Abdallah El Wali Khafawni suffered acute breathing difficulties during a chemical fumigation of the prison cells using toxic substances. The procedure was allegedly conducted without prior notice or basic protective measures, and no medical assistance was provided to him afterward.
These developments raise renewed concerns about systematic medical neglect and mistreatment of Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons, in violation of international human rights standards and basic health protocols.
