Occupied Laayoune – The allegations made by Sahrawi content creator and social media influencer Salama Eddah that he was subjected to an assault last night in the city of Laayoune have sparked widespread reactions on social media, with human rights activists calling for an independent investigation into the circumstances of the incident and for accountability if violations are confirmed.

According to Salama Eddah’s testimony, the 24-year-old Sahrawi content creator said he was subjected to an assault in one of the streets of Laayoune, which he alleged was carried out by Moroccan police officers. He stated that the incident resulted in injuries and pain to his head, left eye, and other parts of his body.

Eddah explained that the incident was not limited to physical violence, claiming that the attackers also showed particular interest in his personal phone and the photos and videos stored on it, raising questions, according to his account, about the motives behind the assault.
The Sahrawi activist stressed that he was not committing any violation or engaging in any activity that could justify what he described as excessive force against him. He questioned why he was attacked in a public street and in front of witnesses.
Eddah affirmed that he will continue seeking justice, stating that he intends to address legal channels and human rights organizations in order to obtain recognition of his rights and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
At the end of his testimony, Eddah said:
“My case is not only about my personal experience; it goes beyond me. Why should I, or the people of my nation, have to go through something like this? All I did was speak about myself and about the suffering of my people.”
Calls for an Independent Investigation
The incident has generated reactions across social media platforms, with activists and human rights defenders calling for a transparent and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, including hearing witnesses and determining responsibilities according to the law.
Human rights advocates emphasize that respecting freedom of expression and ensuring the safety of journalists, content creators, and human rights defenders are fundamental principles recognized by international human rights standards. They stress the importance of protecting individuals from any form of assault or unlawful use of force.
Freedom of Expression in Western Sahara
The reported incident, if confirmed, comes within a broader context in which human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concerns over the challenges faced by some activists, journalists, and human rights defenders in Western Sahara, particularly those who express political or human rights views through media platforms and social networks.
Activists continue to call for greater access for independent media and human rights organizations to the region, as well as transparent investigations into all allegations related to abuses and violations.
Demand for Justice
Salama Eddah maintains that he will continue to pursue his rights through peaceful and legal means, considering that justice in this case represents an important step toward preventing similar incidents in the future.
While awaiting any official response or clarification from the concerned authorities regarding the incident, calls remain ongoing for a transparent investigation that reveals the facts and ensures respect for the law and the rights of all parties involved.
